Slurs found on unoccupied home

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Police are investigating after a contractor discovered racial slurs scrawled on an unoccupied home in the Central Park subdivision July 22.

Although the markings weren’t very prominent, according to Shelby Township Police Chief Robert Leman, “KKK” and other racial slurs were on the home in orange paint, “across from the home that a black family resides in,” he said. The graffiti was “orange paint and just some straight lines sprayed on the siding and the back.”

He said a contractor working in the subdivision on Van Dyke Avenue, north of 23 Mile Road, found the slurs, which will cost several thousand dollars to clean up.

Leman said his department has no suspects, and there were no witnesses to the crime.

But, the work did not appear to be from any particular hate group, according to Leman.

“It appeared like it was kids,” he said.
